What to Expect at a Bend + Mend Session

At Bend + Mend, initial physiotherapy consultations for injury assessment are 30 to 45 minutes long, while follow-up sessions are 30 minutes. We provide gowns and shorts for you to change into; however, feel free to bring your own clothing appropriate for exercise. When coming to a physiotherapy session, please bring any referral letters, scans or X-rays that you may have. If you have private health insurance, we also recommend bringing your card to claim your treatment on the spot.

During your initial consultation, your physiotherapist will ask various questions about your current issues and may enquire about previous general health problems for more information. You can expect to complete some physical assessment so your physio can examine how your body moves to help diagnose your problem. Following your diagnosis, your physiotherapist will provide an in-depth explanation of your issue, including management options, treatment plan and rehabilitation times.

At Bend + Mend, we will always offer the first appointment available, aiming to provide same-day treatment where possible.

Medicare Information

You may be entitled to receive five (5) Medicare-rebatable physiotherapy treatment sessions each year under the Medicare Team Care Arrangement (previously called EPC). You will need to speak to your GP about this, but we’re happy to help answer any questions you might have too.

Your GP will give you a specific referral form to claim physiotherapy under this scheme.

To make the process simpler, we can claim this rebate for you directly at the time of your appointment.

Currently, rebates are available for both in-clinic and Telehealth appointments.

CTP Insurance information

We also provide physiotherapy services for patients who have claimed their costs through Compulsory Third Party Insurance related to a car accident. For these claims, you will not need to go to a medical clinic to obtain a doctor’s referral.

Getting early treatment for these types of injuries can make a significant positive difference to your care and rehabilitation. While your claim number is being organised, we will ask you to settle the cost of the treatment and claim this back from the insurer. Once your claim number has been processed, we will send all invoices directly to the insurer.

Private Health Insurance

When using your private health insurance to pay for your physiotherapy treatment, this is made much simpler now with the ability to use your health fund card directly on our EFTPOS terminals.

Your private health fund automatically calculates and processes the amount your health fund covers you for your session. This amount comes off the cost of your treatment, and you only need to pay the gap.

We accept all types of credit cards (Mastercard, Visa, American Express) and debit cards, as well as cash if this is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what type of physiotherapist to see?

All our physios undertake continuous professional development to maintain these standards so you can feel rest assured that you’re in good hands. Many of our physios have particular interest areas of treatment which you can view above. If you’re unsure who to see, please call reception on (02) 9232 5566 and they will gladly help guide you with this decision.

Is a physiotherapist a doctor?

Physiotherapists are Allied Health Professionals who can either work independently or collaborate with medical doctors and surgeons in various settings such as private practices or hospitals.

The Physiotherapists at Bend + Mend can order imaging to help diagnose a condition and refer to specialist doctors when necessary for your best care.

Do I need a referral to see a physio?

No, Bend + Mend is a primary care practitioner, meaning that people can see them as their first point of call without needing to see a doctor for a referral. If an X-ray or other type of imaging is required, or a referral to a specialist doctor is needed following an initial assessment by the physiotherapist, we can organise this for you here.

However, if you are looking to access the Medicare Team Care Arrangement (previously called EPC) to receive a partial rebate on 5 of your treatments per calendar year, then you’ll need a doctor’s referral.

How much will my health fund cover?

Different health funds and policies within each health fund will cover different amounts for your physiotherapy treatments, so it is best to check with your health fund to find out how much this will be.

The best way to do this is to refer to their PDS, or call your health fund:

  • Medibank: 134 190

  • Bupa: 134 135

  • HCF: 13 13 34

  • nib: 13 16 42

  • HBF: 133 423

Can my physiotherapist refer me for X-rays or scans?

Absolutely, our physios may need to refer you for X-rays or other scans like an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to help diagnose your condition. We will direct you to the most appropriate clinic for the type of imaging needed and the assessment of the injury.
