What is Group Pilates?

Group Pilates at Bend + Mend are small classes of 4 people. We do not give everyone the same exercises, as each individual has their own needs. Each person is assessed first and completes a few private sessions to ascertain your ability. Then once group classes start, you will continue with the same exercises with your Physio guiding and progress you. If you can come twice a week that’s even better. You will only start in the group classes once we know you are competent on the equipment and not experiencing any discomfort. Your Physio will set you up with all class exercises with close supervision and individual correction of technique.

All Bend + Mend Group Classes are run by Physiotherapists and incorporate the use of the Reformer, Trapeze, Wunda-Chair and Barrel Pilates equipment.

Our Physiotherapist-led sessions entitle you to claim under “Physiotherapy” with your private health fund.

Who is suitable for a Group Pilates Class?

About Bend + Mend’s Group Pilates

All our classes are led by experienced Physiotherapists and run for 45 minutes with a maximum of four people per class. All classes incorporate Pilates Equipment including Reformers, Trapeze Table and Wunda Chair. As we tailor each class to the individual, we do not have classes with different levels (beginner etc). Each person completes their own programme under the guidance of their Physio at their own level.

Some people choose to do a class with their friend, partner or colleague which we are happy to accommodate.

Our classes run every weekday starting at 6.45am with the last class finishing at 6.30pm.

The first step is to book an Initial Pilates Assessment after which your Physio will discuss all your Pilates class options.

What To Wear To Group Pilates:

All you need to wear is something you are comfortable to move in such as active wear as well as socks (preferably grippy socks but normal socks are fine as well). We have changerooms onsite for your convenience.

Types of Pilates used in our Group Pilates Classes

  • Reformer Pilates: A Reformer is a low-lying bed which is spring loaded. We use reformer springs to tailor load and target different areas of the body. Lighter springs are often harder!
  • Mat Pilates: Mat Pilates performed lying on a mat utilises body weight to activate core muscles and is often unexpectedly difficult with never-ending exercise options.
  • Trapeze Pilates: A Trapeze table is a higher bed where we use bars and springs to pull down or push up and move the body. It can be used in lying or standing positions according to what muscle groups we want to work. It is well-loved for assisting with spine mobility!
  • Wunda-Chair Pilates: The Wunda Chair is a smaller piece of Pilates equipment on which you can sit or stand. It is also spring loaded with may levels of resistance available. It is popular for lunges and balance work.
  • Barrel Pilates: The barrel is a curved piece of equipment which is great for stretching as well as abdominal work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I do Pilates?

We recommend you do Pilates with a Physio once or twice a week. This may depend on what your overall goals are and what other types of exercise you perform during the week.

What should I bring to a Pilates Class?

All you need to bring is your activewear to change into and some pilates socks. No need for trainers! We have changerooms onsite and water available.

Are Group Classes at Bend + Mend appropriate for beginners?

Yes! Even if you have never done equipment Pilates before, you can still join our classes. After your Initial Pilates Assessment your Physio will be able to design a programme to suit your level.

Should I consider Group Pilates if I’m recovering from an injury or operation?

Absolutely. Pilates is one of the best forms of rehabilitation and you can start quite soon after your procedure or injury. We are happy to assist with a start date recommendation.
