What is Bend + Mend Backs?

Bend + Mend Backs is an evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation programme for people with back pain affecting their everyday life. The programme combines early hands-on treatment, specific core stability exercises and group classes to relieve pain and prevent recurrence.

The goal of the programme is for our patients to be strong, mobile and balanced and we offer them ongoing supervised classes to help maintain an active lifestyle.

Each element of the programme has been designed by Titled Musculoskeletal Physiotherapists based on the best available research and knowledge for back pain treatment. These include:

  1. Initial Consultation with a Physiotherapist trained in back pain management, including neurological testing.
  2. Hands-on manual therapy for early pain relief and to restore movement.
  3. Exercises prescribed and guided under one-on-one physiotherapist supervision.
  4. Key measurements taken and retested.
  5. Small guided exercise classes (max 4 people) run by our Physio’s trained in back rehabilitation.

Who is the programme suitable for?

Bend + Mend Backs manages people with lower back pain of all complexities and at all stages: from the onset of acute pain through to a return to pre-injury activity.

  • Acute or chronic back pain
  • Neurological signs and/or symptoms
  • Pain during work and daily activities
  • Leg pain referred from the back
  • Reduced exercise tolerance due to back pain

The programme is suitable for all ages. The current age range of our group is 18-86 years old.

What to expect from the Group Exercise Sessions

All Bend + Mend Back’s sessions are run by Physiotherapists trained in back treatment. Following your early treatment your Physio will prescribe and guide exercises based on your goals and key measurements. Our small group classes are 45 minutes and have a maximum of 4 people, with each person following their own individualised program.

Won’t my back pain get better by itself over time?

Low back pain is the leading cause of disability around the world. In fact, disability due to back pain has risen by more than 50% since 1990.

Unfortunately, studies have shown that many people get the wrong care and recurrent symptoms are common. 65% of patients will still report pain at 3 months and 33% of people have another episode of back pain within one year.
